I live in Brisbane Australia and like all boys from this region, I grew up playing lots of sport and surfing. After finishing colledge I went to Medical School and graduated as a doctor in 1979. I then took 7 years off from work to compete in International atthletics at the 800m and 1500m. I trained for the Commonwealth Games and Olympics up until 1986 and after retiring, I commenced my medical career as a General Physician with a special interest in Sports Medicine. I have worked in this capacity up until the present day.
I first discovered strategy board games in 1980 and instantly became a gaming enthusiast. The classic Avalon Hill wargames were my first games and I started a collection that reached around 200 games. In 1988 I won the Australian Boardgame Championship and as a result went to AvalonCon in the USA. Here I met Eric Dott, the owner of Avalon Hill and he asked if I could design a sequel to their great game "Diplomacy". I designed "Colonial Diplomacy" and it was published in 1994. I was thrilled when it won Games100, Historical Game of the Year. It was that year that I first discovered the wonderful games produced in Germany- my first games were "Manhattan" and "Modern Art". My ambition was to someday have a game published in Germany and to attend Messe Essen- it is a long way from Australia.
Peter Eggert and I met in 2007 and he went on to publish my next game " Heads of State", so my dream had come true and I saw the release of my game at Essen 2009. That was a wonderful experience. My work as a doctor keeps me very busy, so I don't have much time to design games, but I play at least twice a week. However, my next design has just been finished, "Wars of the Roses" and it will be released in 2010. I hope the hobby of boardgaming continues to grow and the great German Game Companies continue to publish high quality titles.
